5 Tips to Lose Weight the Right Way

Well, we find ourselves on the precipice of another year and if you find yourself feeling like ole’ Mister Fat Cat I can only guess what your New Year’s Resolution might be this year.  Most of us will make a New Year’s resolution to lose 10, 20, or more pounds with the goal of fitting into that new bathing suit or little black dress. But how can we do it in a healthy way instead of just focusing on the end result? To help both myself and anyone reading this article I compiled a list of five ways to lose weight healthily in 2014.

1. Drink more water. Sounds simple right? I for one have heard this more than once from my mother, doctors, and friends but have rarely followed through with it. To help me keep better track of how much water I need every day I discovered this nifty water calculator at about.com. All you have to do is enter your weight and answer a couple of questions and the calculator tells you how much water you should be drinking every day. Check it out. It might just help you lose weight.

2. Stick to the tried and true. There’s more to losing weight then just losing weight. In fact, keeping weight off is just as important as losing it in the first place and in order to do that you need to learn to balance energy in with energy out. In a survey conducted by Consumer Reports in 2002, 32,000 dieters shared their experiences. One quarter of those surveyed lost 10% of their starting body weight and kept it off for at least a year. Most of these individuals claimed that eating less and exercising more was the key to their success. So needless to say, this year I’m going to do my best to eat less and exercise more.

3. Skip the fast food and opt to eat at home. Personally, I have a tendency to eat on the run quite a bit and because of this I pack on the pounds. This year I’m going to make it my ultimate goal to cut out as much fast food as possible. Cooking at home will allow me to plan my meals in advance and choose healthier options like fruits and veggies, so this I shall do in 2014!

4. Shoot for realistic goals. Instead of saying I’m going to lose 10 pounds in the next two weeks set a more realistic goal such as I want to lose 1 to 2 pounds every week. This makes it more rewarding when you look down at the scale and see you lost 5 pounds or more over your goal. I’m pretty positive this will help keep me motivated in both my exercise routine and my eating habits.

5. Focus on nutrition instead of calories. Working towards the goal of optimal physical health will actually equate to more weight loss than dieting alone. If you’re reaching for food items that actually provide nutritional benefit for your body as a whole then chances are you will lose weight. For example, if I want to feel better I would probably choose a salad with grilled chicken instead of fried chicken with french fries. It’s just common sense.

I want to wish everyone a happy New Year’s Eve and an even more prosperous, spiritually enlightening, and beautiful New Year in 2014! May we all reach our New Year’s Resolutions this year and make our lives happier and healthier.
